Drug Action In Pancreatic Cancer Tracked

UK and Australian scientists have been able to show ways in which we can markedly improve drug targeting of solid tumours, using tiny 'biosensors' along with new advanced imaging techniques.

In real time and in three dimensions, these technologies can show us how cancersspread and how active cancer cells respond to a particular drug. They can also tell us how much, how often and how long to administer drugs. Finally, using preclinical models of the disease, they can guide the use of 'combination therapies', techniques that enhance drug delivery by breaking up the tissue surrounding a tumour.

The study was performed by Dr Paul Timpson of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and Professor Kurt Anderson of the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research in Glasgow, UK. PhD student Max Nobis studied the signaling protein 'Src', which becomes activated to drive invasive pancreatic cancer, and looked at how it could best be deactivated by a small molecule inhibitor - currently in phase II clinical trials - known as 'dasatinib'. Their findings are published in the journal Cancer Research, now online.

"We have already shown that Src is activated in pancreatic tumours and we knew that dasatinib deactivates Src and could partially reduce the spread of this form of cancer. Through a collaborative partner in the US, we had access to FRET (Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer) imaging technology," said Dr Paul Timpson.

"Until now, we have been limited to studying tumour signalling in two dimensions - and lacked a dynamic way of reporting on drug targeting in live tumour tissue. Nanotechnology opens up a portal into living tissue that allows us to watch cancers spreading, and to determine which parts of a tumour we should be targeting with drugs."

"This imaging technology has allowed us to map areas within the tumour that are highly aggressive, allowing us to pinpoint regions of poor drug delivery deep within a tumour at sub-cellular resolution. We can then see where we need to improve on drug delivery to improve clinical outcome."
It has been hard to treat pancreatic tumours because they are extremely dense with collagen and have poor blood vessel networks for delivering drugs.
Professor Kurt Anderson observed that combination therapies can now be used to break down collagen, weakening tumour architecture and making it easier to get the drugs where they need to be. "The trick is to break down the structure just enough to get the drug in, but not so much that you damage the organ itself," he said.
"These new FRET technologies help us gauge what is just enough and not too much."
"These are very exciting discoveries - we now have spatial and temporal information about cancer behaviour that we've never had before, as well as the nanotechnology to monitor and improve drug delivery in hard to reach tumour regions."

Eyeball Licking (Oculolinctus) Can Be Dangerous, Doctors Warn

Eyeball-licking fetishism, also known as "oculolinctus" or "worming", has become a popular way of expressing affection or inciting sexual arousal in Japan. Doctors warn that it is linked to a serious risk of virus conjunctivitis, other eye infections, and even blindness

According to the Japanese website Naver Matome, the oculolinctus craze in the country among young lovers has resulted in a significant increase in eye-infection cases.

Naver Matome first reported on eyeball-licking when a Japanese school noticed that children were coming into class wearing eye patches. Apparently, one third of all the twelve-year-old children at the school had engaged in oculolinctus. When the tongue makes contact with the eye, it is exposed to all kinds of infections and eye damage.
In an interview with the Huffington Post, David Granet, M.D., an ophthalmologist said "Nothing good can come of this. There are ridges on the tongue that can cause a corneal abrasion. And if a person hasn't washed out their mouth, they might put acid from citrus products or spices into the eye."
There is a serious risk of passing on viruses. If somebody who does the licking has herpes and a cold sore, there is a risk of human transmission via oculolinctus.
The International Science Times quoted Dr. Phillip Rizzuto, a spokesman for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, who said there is a risk of eventual blindness. "The bacteria in the mouth are nothing like the bacteria in the eyeball, which is why we no longer recommend people lick contact lenses to moisten them.," Rizzuto added. If the person doing the licking suffers from halitosis (bad breath), they are likely to have a huge number of harmful bacteria. Allow them to lick your eyeball, which has an absorbing membrane, and your risk of infection is considerable.
Animals use their tongues for personal hygiene (watch a cat cleaning itself), to a certain extent humans do the same. However, the tongue and mouth are designed to deal with a much wider variety of pathogens than our eyeballs are. Who knows what would be passed on to somebody's eye when the licker had just licked his/her hands, especially if that hand has not been washed in a while.

Pomegranate fruit is beneficial

Pomegranate fruit is beneficial

Pomegranate has been used thousands of years as a food. Pomegranate seeds ever found in the Middle Bronze Age archaeological site (5000 years ago) in Jericho and Nimrud in Israel. The Sumerians had planted a pomegranate tree under palm trees at about 3000 BC. Pomegranates are very often referred to in the Old Testament. In the Quran surat Al Rahman verse 68, Pomegranate (Rumman) called 3 times as much as other than the date palm fruit that grows in heaven. After studying various ancient text sources, experts theorize that pomegranate may be "apples" who grew up in the Garden of Eden. Latin name of pomegranate, Punica granatum, means that a lot of apple seeds.

Traditional Medicine

In addition to the food, pomegranate health benefits have been known and used widely in many cultures. Use of the most famous in the world is as intestinal worming (root extract). In the Ebers Papyrus, dated 1530 BC, pomegranate root decoction is listed as the intestinal parasite drugs, the use of which continues today. In Ayurveda (traditional Indian medicine), pomegranate called as a substance that cool effect, especially in the marrow, blood and nerves. A century Greek physician named Soranus 2, an early writer gynecology in ancient history, mentions pomegranate seeds as oral contraceptives and vaginal suppositories, in his work on five prescription utilization pomegranate. Other authors such as Hippocrates, Dioscorides, and Ibn Sina has explained the use of pomegranate seeds to prevent conception. Today, pomegranate seeds are still used as a folk contraception in some African regions.

modern research

In the last decade, hundreds of scientific papers have been published about the pomegranate. Many magical effects of pomegranate has been proven in studies and human clinical trials. If you have not been eating or drinking pomegranate juice on a regular basis, here are nine reasons why you need to do:

1. antioxidants

Recent research shows that pomegranates are rich in anthocyanidins are potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatory. Pomegranate juice is touted to have more antioxidants than "super foods" such as red wine, green tea and blueberries. Antioxidants fight free radicals that can damage cells. This cellular damage associated with all sorts of diseases including cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer's.

2. protect the heart

A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that pomegranate juice to combat hardening of the arteries and related diseases such as heart attack and stroke. Pomegranates prevent the buildup of plaque in the arteries and can shed the previous plaque buildup.

Another study in the Journal of Cardiology found that patients of coronary heart disease (CHD) who drank pomegranate juice daily for three months showed an increase in blood flow to the heart about 17 percent. Blood flow has decreased by 18 percent in the placebo group.

3. Lowering bad cholesterol

According to research in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the antioxidants in pomegranates may reduce the oxidation of LDL (bad cholesterol) in mice. This decrease in LDL cholesterol and raise HDL (good cholesterol).

4. Lowers blood pressure

One study showed that drinking 1.7 ounces of pomegranate juice per day lowered systolic blood pressure by 5 percent.

5. Prevent and treat cancer

Pomegranate fruit has efficacy to prevent and treat various types of cancer:

Studies in Israel show that pomegranate juice destroys breast cancer cells while allowing healthy cells. Pomegranate may also prevent the formation of breast cancer cells.
Fermented pomegranate seed extract is rich in polyphenols promote the recovery of leukemia cells returned to normal.
Studies in mice show that pomegranate juice may inhibit the development of lung cancer and prostate cancer. In a study of 50 men who had undergone prostate cancer treatment, consumption of 205 grams of pomegranate juice every day slows PSA doubling (the size of prostate cancer development) and reduce the need for further treatment such as chemotherapy or hormone therapy. None of the patients who develop cancer to spread beyond the prostate during the study.

Tips consuming pomegranate
When buying pomegranates, choose heavy and not cracked skin. When stored in the refrigerator, this fruit can last up to six months. But better eating fresh.

To open a pomegranate, first you have to cut the crown, then sliced her skin from top to bottom in three or four parts. Open the pomegranate skin with your fingers and grab the contents of the bowl into the fruit.

Both meat and pomegranate seeds are edible. Pomegranate seeds are a source of fiber and nutrients that are good, if you feel comfortable eating it. Many properties there are in the seeds of pomegranates.

Health Benefits of Garlic

Garlic not only spices, but traditionally also used for different types of workers pengobatan.Para Romans and Ancient Egyptians used garlic to increase their physical endurance. In the 20th century, used garlic to fight global influenza pandemic. Currently, more than 5,000 scientific publications from around the world have gradually confirmed the health benefits of garlic, which include antibiotic properties, anti-cholesterol, anti-hypertensive, anti-fungal and many others.

Health benefits of garlic is mainly derived from the two substances contained therein, which allicin and diallyl sulphides.

Allicin is the main active component of garlic. First reported by CJ Cavallito in 1944, allicin is the key ingredient responsible for the broad spectrum of anti-bacterial activity in garlic. The research also showed that allicin role of cholesterol lowering, anti-clotting, anti-hypertensive, anti-cancer, antioxidant and anti-microbial. Because the effect of anti-fungus, garlic has long been used as a folk medicine to treat skin infections, such as athlete's foot (athlete's foot).

Chemical properties of garlic are very complex. Fresh garlic contains an enzyme (called allinase) and alliin, which is contained in different parts of the plant. The unique structure was designed as a defense mechanism against pathogenic soil microbes. When fungi or other pathogens invade the land of garlic, crushed membrane compartment, and within 10 seconds, all the alliin is converted into a new compound called allicin. It is a very efficient weapon for defense systems garlic active only in specific locations for short periods of time, while others remain alliin allinase and stored in compartments each and are available for further microbial attack. Allicin is produced too much of it can be harmful for the network and plant enzymes.

Allicin

Allicin is not found in fresh garlic. This is because fresh garlic consists of 65% water and only contains alliin, allicin is not. One clove of fresh garlic may contain alliin 6-14 mg per gram. Natural allicin potential is 2.5 to 5.1 mcg per gram alliin. To get allicin, garlic should be finely chopped or diuleg. The more refined and intensive cutting, the more allicin is generated and the stronger the effect of the medicine. Allicin, which makes the distinctive smell of garlic chopped, quickly broken. Allicin will be damaged if allowed to stand within a few minutes at room temperature or if cooked too long.

Some people prefer garlic supplements. Garlic pills and capsules have the advantage of not having a pungent smell of garlic. However, the products do not contain allicin. Dried garlic powder only contains allinase and alliin. At equal weight, dried garlic powder had higher levels of alliin three times more than fresh garlic. To maintain allinase sensitive to stomach acid (so alliin can be converted into allicin), dried garlic powder is usually coated capsule that protects it from stomach acid, so the allicin can be produced in the intestines.

Diallyl sulfide

Diallyl sulfide is another component in garlic is beneficial to health, though not as strong as allicin. Diallyl sulfide is the decomposition of allicin, making it more stable than allicin. Active power is not declining rapidly and can persist after cooked.

Diallyl sulfide do not have anti-fungal properties such as allicin. However, this substance is reportedly good for blood circulation, help lower levels of bad cholesterol and boost the immune system. Diallyl sulfide beneficial to detoxify cells, thus preventing damage to the liver cells, intestinal and nervous. With support detoxification of the liver, diallyl sulfide may protect the liver during chemotherapy. Garlic can prevent the development of colorectal cancer and cardiovascular disease. Several studies indicate that diallyl sulfide was the one who was primarily responsible for the action.

Tips for You
Garlic is very strong and needs to be treated properly:

  • Be careful when you chop garlic. Too much contact with minced garlic can cause skin irritation.
  • Stop eating garlic if you have allergies. Some people are allergic to garlic. Symptoms of garlic allergy include skin rash, fever and headache.
  • Cooking too long and use a microwave to destroy allicin and eliminate health benefits. So that the effect of the medicine is stronger, chopped fresh garlic and mix with dishes just before serving. Do not overdo add garlic, too much garlic can irritate the stomach and may even damage the digestive tract.
  • If you are taking garlic supplements, break consumption with small daily doses but often rather than one large daily dose.
  • If you are taking any pharmaceutical medication, check with your doctor first if you can take a garlic supplement. In general, the pharmaceutical drugs and herbal supplements should be given a delay of 2 hours in order to avoid drug interactions.
  • Do not take garlic supplements if you are taking blood-thinning drugs or medications that thin the blood effect (such as aspirin, warfarin, etc.). Properties of garlic thins the blood can duplicate the effects of the drug to a dangerous level. Garlic also potentially disrupt anti-coagulants, so should be avoided before and after surgery.

The Benefits of Tea

The Benefits of Tea

Much has been written and said about the amazing health benefits of tea. So much in fact, that it's often difficult to separate fact from fiction. What are the scientifically recognized benefits of tea? The following is a brief synopsis of the latest findings.
Aging
If you are the type to fret over the appearance of wrinkles, age spots and other signs of growing old, oolong tea may be the answer to your worries. In a recent experiment carried out jointly by researchers from the US, Taiwan and Japan, mice which were fed tea displayed fewer signs of aging than mice that were fed water. The Straits Times, Sept. 24, 01
Allergies
The wonder cup just got even more wonderful. Green tea, rich in antioxidant treasures that protect against heart disease and cancer, now shows promise as an allergy fighter. In laboratory tests, Japanese researchers have found that the antioxidants in green tea, block the biochemical process involved in producing an allergic response. Green tea may be useful against a wide range of sneeze-starting allergens, including pollen, pet dander, and dust. Prevention, April 2003
Arthritis
Green tea catechins are chondroprotective and consumption of green tea may be prophylactic for arthritis and may benefit the arthritis patient by reducing inflammation and slowing cartilage breakdown. The Journal of Nutrition, Mar 2002
Green tea may be useful in controlling inflammation from injury or diseases such as arthritis. Boston Globe, April 26, 99
Bone Strength
Tea flavonoids may be bone builders. A report in this week's Archives of Internal Medicine looked at about 500 Chinese men and women who regularly drank black, green, or oolong tea for more than 10 years. Compared with nonhabitual tea drinkers, tea regulars had higher bone mineral densities, even after exercise and calcium-which strengthen bones-were taken into account. U.S. News & World Report, May 20, 2002
Cancer
"Tea is one of the single best cancer fighters you can put in your body," according to Mitchell Gaynor, MD, director of medical oncology at the world-renowned Strong Cancer Prevention Center in New York City and co-author of Dr. Gaynor's Cancer Prevention Program. The latest tea discovery? Strong evidence that both green and black tea can fight cancer-at least in the test tube-though green tea holds a slight edge. In a new study, both teas kept healthy cells from turning malignant after exposure to cancer-causing compounds. Prevention, May 2000
People who drink about 4 cups of green tea a day seem to get less cancer. Now we may know why. In recent test-tube studies, a compound called EGCG, a powerful antioxidant in tea, inhibited an enzyme that cancer cells need in order to grow. The cancer cells that couldn't grow big enough to divide self-destructed. It would take about 4 cups of green tea a day to get the blood levels of EGCG that inhibited cancer in the study. Black tea also contains EGCG, but at much lower concentrations. Prevention, Aug 1999
Cholesterol
Tea can lower 'bad' cholesterol levels. Researchers at the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center in Beltsville, Maryland, asked test subjects to eat low-fat, low-calorie prepared meals and drink five cups of caffeinated tea or caffeinated and non-caffeinated placebos that mimicked the look of tea. Levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol dropped 10 percent among the test subjects who drank tea. Vegetarian Times, Jan 2003
Heart Disease
Drinking black tea may lower the risk of heart disease because it prevents blood from clumping and forming clots. In a recent study, researchers found that while drinking black tea, the participants had lower levels of the blood protein associated with coagulation. Better Nutrition, Jan 2002
Better to be deprived of food for three days than tea for one,Ó says a Chinese proverb. Research is showing it may just be true. Dr. Kenneth Mukamal of Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center reported that out of 1,900 heart-attack patients, those who drank two or more cups a day reduced their risks of dying over the next 3.8 years by 44 percent. Newsweek, May 20, 2002
Weight Loss
Trying to lose weight? Reach for a cup of green tea instead of a diet beverage. Compared to the placebo and caffeine, green tea extract consumption produced a significant 4% increase in 24-hour energy expenditure. If you consume 2,000 calories per day and don't gain or lose weight (you're in energy balance), an increase of 4% would translate roughly into an 80-calorie daily difference. Over a year, this could result in 89 pounds of weight loss. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Nov 1999
Recent evidence shows that in the battle of fat loss, green tea may be superior to plain caffeine. According to a new study, green tea appears to accelerate calorie burning - including fat calories. Researchers suggest compounds in green tea called flavonoids may change how the body uses a hormone called norepinephrine, which then speeds the rate calories are burned. Joe Weider's Muscle & Fitness, April 2000
Loose vs Bags
Tea made from loose leaves has more antioxidants than tea bags, which tend to have lower-quality, powdered leaves. Prevention, April 2003
Black vs Green
Black tea is turning out to be just as healthful as green tea. Univ of California Wellness Letter, March 2002
One cup of black or green tea has more antioxidant power than a serving of broccoli, carrots, or spinach. Prevention, Aug 1998
Decaf Tea
Tea decaffeinated using a natural CO-2 process retains 90% of its cancer-fighting properties. Prevention, Feb 2000
Java junkies, perk up: Substituting tea for coffee will cut your caffeine intake by more than half. Prevention, May 96

Vegetarians Live Longer Than Meat-Eaters

Vegetarians may live longer than meat-eaters, according to a new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine.

The research involved over 70,000 members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and showed that vegetarian diets are linked to reduced death rates with more favorable results for males than females. The potential association between diet and mortality is a critical area of research, the authors explained.

Vegetarian diets have been linked to a lower risk of several chronic diseases, such as:
metabolic syndrome
hypertension
ischemic heart disease (IHD)
diabetes mellitus

A previous study involving over 60,000 Britons suggested that vegetarians have a lower risk of developing cancer than meat-eaters.

A total of 73,308 men and women Seventh-day Adventists were involved in the research, led by Michael J. Orlich, M.D., of Loma Linda University in California, which observed all-cause and cause-specific mortality.

Dietary patients were evaluated using a questionnaire that categorized the subjects into 5 groups:
non-vegetarian
semi-vegetarian
pesco-vegetarian - includes seafood
lacto-ovo-vegetarian - includes dairy and egg products
vegan - excludes all animal products

Vegetarian groups were inclined to be older, more highly educated, and more likely to be married. They also tended to drink less alcohol, smoke less, exercise more and be thinner.

Previous research conducted by Cancer Research UK showed that vegetarians put on less weight than meat-eaters, and vegans put on less weight than vegetarians.

The researchers pointed out:

"Some evidence suggests vegetarian dietary patterns may be associated with reduced mortality, but the relationship is not well established."

During an average follow-up time of nearly six years, the experts identified 2,570 deaths among the volunteers.

Results showed that overall, the mortality rate was 6 deaths per 1,000 person years, the scientists said. "The adjusted hazard ratio (HR) for all-cause mortality in all vegetarians combined vs. non-vegetarians was 0.88, or 12 percent lower."

Additionally, the association seemed to be more favorable for men with notable reduction in heart disease mortality and IHD death in vegetarians compared to non-vegetarians.

Women, on the other hand, did not experience considerable reductions in these categories of mortality.

The experts concluded:

"These results demonstrate an overall association of vegetarian dietary patterns with lower mortality compared with the non-vegetarian dietary pattern. They also demonstrate some associations with lower mortality of the pesco-vegetarian, vegan and lacto-ovo-vegetarian diets specifically compared with the non-vegetarian diet."

Bee Venom Destroys HIV And Spares Surrounding Cells

Nanoparticles containing bee venom toxin melittin can destroy human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) while at the same time leaving surrounding cells unharmed, scientists from Washington University School of Medicine reported in the March 2013 issue of Antiviral Therapy.
The researchers said that their finding is a major step toward creating a vaginal gel that can prevent HIV spread. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS.

Marijuana, Diabetes Drugs of the Future?

Scientists continue to explore the ability of cannabis, aka marijuana plants in treatment. New study says, marijuana contains components that can help control blood sugar.

Cannabis also has a strong association with body weight. In addition to increasing appetite, cannabis could actually help a person to stay slim.
Three recent studies showed that marijuana users had a lower risk of obesity. In addition, they also have a lower risk of diabetes and body mass index values are smaller. The third benefit is obtained even though the marijuana users drink more calories.
How does that happen? One reason is because marijuana users have a better carbohydrate metabolism.
"Their fasting insulin levels were also lower, and they also have a lower risk of insulin resistance (a condition that triggers diabetes) due to their body's ability to maintain normal blood sugar levels," said Murray Mittleman, of Harvard Medical School researchers.
Research conducted Mittleman it includes 4,600 men and women who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2005-2010.
Of these respondents, 48 percent had smoked marijuana at least once in their lives, and 12 percent are still sucking up now.
The researchers controlled for other risk factors that affect the risk of diabetes, such as age, gender, akohol use, smoking habits, and physical activity.
Although the risk factors taken into account, the marijuana users until now have fasting insulin levels 16 percent lower than those who had never smoked or had not smoked again. The cannabis was also getting sucker decreased levels of insulin resistance around 17 percent.
Fasting insulin levels and insulin resistance levels are also closely associated with the occurrence of type two diabetes and obesity.
The marijuana users also turned out to have higher levels of good cholesterol, which can protect the body from heart disease. In general, they also have a smaller waist circumference.
Researchers do not yet fully understand the connection because this research is not case-control studies. Also not known whether marijuana or other lifestyle factors that of the respondents who cause they got a number of health benefits.
One of the allegations is the influence of marijuana at specific receptors in the brain related to appetite and metabolism.

These signs Frequently At Heart Attacks

Perhaps many of you who've never read the signs or symptoms of a heart attack from the literature. Of the many symptoms, chest pain and tightness may be a sign of the most popular of these attacks can be deadly.Heartbeats become irregular during the attack. Patients also often spend a lot of sweat, which is accompanied by nausea or vomiting
According to the specialist heart and blood vessel disease dr. Muhammad Zaini, Sp.JP (K), there really is not a typical symptom of a heart attack. But chest pain in the middle or left to be the most commonly recognized symptom.

"The pain can spread to other areas. Yet this pain is different with aches and pains or colds," Zaini said the seminar lay 'Heart Disease Can Be Treated', which was held RS. Premier Jatinegara Jakarta, Sunday (02/06/2013).
This pain can be accompanied by shortness of breath that can cause patients to experience sudden death. Chest pain in the middle or left due to the fast flowing blood flow in the blood vessels narrow.
The narrowness of the blood vessels in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) due to "boil" that are found in blood vessels inside. "Boils" contains lime, fat, or cholesterol.
Zaini said, 90 percent of heart disease due to the many "boils" or "bump" on the inside of blood vessels. "Boils" which broke causing blood to clot, and blocking the flow of the coronary vessels into the heart. As a result, the heart of the shortage of supply of nutrients and oxygen.
Thus, some of the heart muscle dies and can not perform its function as a blood pump. This condition is often referred to as heart failure. This gives the sensation of pain like pressure, or affected by a blunt object. Heartbeats become irregular during the attack. Patients also often spend a lot of sweat, which is accompanied by nausea or vomiting.
According to Zaini, heart attack symptoms are often mistaken for a cold or a stomach illness. Especially if the pain radiating to the neck, arms and solar plexus. Although, the pain of a heart attack can also spread to the jaw.
"The difference is in the activities undertaken previously. When the pain goes away after the break, it was caused by a heart attack," said Zaini.
Activities that deplete the physical and emotional capabilities, causes the heart to need extra nutrients and blood supply. Consequently, the blood flows faster to address the needs of the supply. Blood flow stimulates rapid onset of pain in the blood vessels. Zaini said, in fact it is difficult for the layman to distinguish the symptoms if there are relatives or her a heart attack.
"The important distinction when and how the pain is coming. Repeated and if the time comes after strenuous work, check with your doctor immediately," he said.
